The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Reveal a Fresh Divinity, Labeling it Their Most Ambitious RPG to Date

The anticipation about the recent awards show was significant, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a desert monolith. The mystery is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is creating a completely new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer packed with striking imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very opening of infernal gates.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This phrasing implies that the team could be designing a faster-paced experience instead of another turn-based title. For now, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it kicked off the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, player agency, and flexible progression—traits that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs that are viable with a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, letting players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be completed in a variety of manners, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is precisely these elements that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can look forward to another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
