Together Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Consider this a dare for partners in committed relationships who enjoy scary movies: Sit down with your loved one and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like conventional body horror, but within Together resides a profound meditation about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Debut Feature Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for a decade. Married in real life in 2017, the two stars bring a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The narrative commences when Tim and Millie move from the urban environment to the countryside for her career. A familiar narrative setup, of course, but that’s largely where the tropes cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists fall into an underground cave. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying of scares, weaving in moments of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and delivers them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and removed from his social circle. He fears the concept of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in another person. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together avoids making Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Both characters grapple with the sort of issues that arise in any relationship a decade in. Deep down, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these fears of codependency and fully committing to another person, the metaphor avoids being overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. On the other hand, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the finale sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your significant other and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can experience right now.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform at present.
